Primary school pupils are being trained by Sports Coaching Group to lead games, support other pupils and help create a safe, friendly and structured playground environment.

Colleagues are working in three schools in Cheshire and Shropshire teaching the youngsters on the Playleaders Programme.

As part of the six-week programme children learn:

  • What is a playleader;
  • What makes a good leader;
  • Various games and activities that the children can teach KS1 children;
  • What makes a safe playground.

At the end of the scheme the Year 6 playleaders will lead their own games and activities with Year 1 and 2 children during lunchtimes.

Designed to boost confidence, encourage teamwork and promote physical activity, the programme gives participating children the chance to take on real leadership roles within their school.

Playleaders learn how to organise simple playground games, manage equipment, promote fair play and offer support to younger pupils who may feel unsure about joining in.

Sports Coaching Group is pleased to be introducing this programme across the schools, helping them embed a culture of active, positive play.

Our coaching team works directly with selected pupils, delivering tailored training sessions that teach communication skills, problem-solving, responsibility and empathy.

The benefits extend far beyond breaktime.

Teachers tell us that Playleaders return to class with improved confidence, better focus and a real sense of pride in their role.

They become positive role models within their school communities, and their new skills often transfer into their learning and social interactions.

For the wider school, the impact is equally powerful.

With structured and supervised activities led by Playleaders, playground behaviour improves, minor conflicts decrease and children who previously felt left out now have an opportunity to take part.

By launching the Playleaders Programme across three schools, Sports Coaching Group is helping to create playgrounds where every child feels included, engaged and supported.

The early results have been extremely encouraging, and we look forward to bringing the scheme to even more schools.
