A new programme designed to support confidence, communication and personal development among young girls has been launched today by Sports Coaching Group today (February 26).

The course, The Confidence Movement, has been developed to provide structured opportunities for girls to build self-belief, develop leadership skills and strengthen their ability to communicate effectively with peers.

The initiative is based on the principle that confidence is not simply something young people develop over time, but a skill that can be actively taught and practised through guided experiences.

Delivered through trust-based physical activities, the programme encourages participants to lead collaborative challenges, helping classmates navigate tasks that require teamwork, decision-making and clear verbal communication.

By placing girls in leadership roles within supportive environments, the sessions aim to create safe spaces where participants feel comfortable expressing ideas and contributing openly.

Alongside physical activity, the course incorporates classroom-style discussions and reflective learning focused on key topics affecting young people today.

These include self-evaluation, growth versus fixed mindset, media literacy and body image awareness, amplifying the voice of young girls, and understanding the importance of friendship and community.

Programme leaders say the initiative responds to growing recognition within education that confidence plays a significant role in wider outcomes, including classroom engagement, participation in sport and future leadership aspirations.

Chris Regan, Co-Founder and Safeguarding Lead at Sports Coaching Group, said the programme has been designed to address challenges young girls increasingly face both in and outside of school environments.

“We see first-hand how confidence can influence whether a young person chooses to take part, speak up or believe in their own abilities.

The Confidence Movement is about creating safe, supportive spaces where girls feel heard and valued, while giving them practical opportunities to lead and communicate with others.

“By combining physical activity with meaningful discussion, we can help develop skills that go far beyond sport and positively impact their wellbeing and future aspirations.”

Research and experience within youth development settings suggest many girls reach secondary education without having had structured opportunities to practise using their voice or develop leadership skills in a supportive setting.

By introducing The Confidence Movement, Sports Coaching Group aims to place confidence-building higher on the educational agenda, using physical activity as a practical and engaging way to support personal growth alongside academic learning.

Schools taking part in the programme will see sessions delivered throughout the term, with educators and youth practitioners invited to share feedback on how confidence development can play a stronger role within modern education.

The programme was delivered for the first time at a high school in Stoke-on-Trent.
